‘With India touring England next year, I wanted to show how good I am’- Yuzvendra Chahal on county stint

Famous spinner Yuzvendra Chahal was not selected for the recently ended Duleep Trophy and lost his spot in the T20I team following his World Cup victory. Instead, he chose to participate in County Cricket Division II with Northamptonshire. The spinner amassed 19 wickets in four games, including a five-for against Kent.

Chahal talked about his drive to succeed and compete for a spot in the Indian Test team when discussing his motivation for playing county cricket. Chahal was never selected for the Test team since Kuldeep Yadav, Axar Patel, Ravindra Jadeja, and Ravichandran Ashwin were all eligible for selection; nonetheless, he still wants to be considered for the next England series, which starts in June 2025.

“City cricket is a hard sport. It provided me with a chance to demonstrate my abilities against very high calibre cricket players. I wanted to show how excellent I am because India is touring England next year,” Chahal told The Times of India.

Additionally, he expressed gratitude to the Rajasthan Royals coaches for introducing him to 18-year-old rookie Krish Patel. In addition, he thanked Brindon for giving him a chance to win the county championship.

“First of all, I would like to express my gratitude to Brindon Sir for giving me the chance to play County cricket. After that, the coaches of the Rajasthan Royals introduced me to Krish Patel, an exceptionally intelligent 18-year-old cricket player who is expected to have a bright career in the sport. I’m always here to help if I can, and I want to see him perform worldwide,” he continued.

Chahal will play his next Ranji Trophy match for Haryana. As the competition determines whether he will be selected for the Test series against England, he will be keen to maintain the momentum. When it comes to Test cricket at the moment, he is completely irrelevant.
