Multiple activity across continents kicked off the 2025–27 World Test Championship (WTC) cycle. While Bangladesh and India squandered early opportunities despite excellent performances, Sri Lanka and Australia have gotten off to strong beginnings with convincing victories.
A two-match Test series between Sri Lanka and Bangladesh started with a run-fest in Galle that finished in a tie. Each team scored four points. But thanks Lanka Prabath Jayasuriya’s five wicket haul, the hosts dominated the second Test at Colombo, winning by an innings and 78 runs to secure a 1-0 series victory and their first WTC points.
In the meantime, Australia dominated the West Indies in the opening Test match at Barbados on June 27 to start their WTC campaign. With five wickets in the second innings, Josh Hazlewood spearheaded the attack and made sure Australia easily won by 159 runs.
India suffered a defeat at Headingley, Leeds, in the first Test of their five-match series against England. India lost by five wickets after failing to defend a 371-run goal after amassing over 800 runs and five hundreds, including two from Rishabh Pant.
Australia and the West Indies will play the second Test of their three-match series in Grenada on July 3, while the second India vs. England Test starts on July 2 at Edgbaston.
South Africa, the reigning WTC champions, has not yet started their campaign in the new cycle. However, the 2025–27 cycle will also see the debut of the 2021 champions New Zealand and Pakistan, which does not yet improve their standing on the points table.
