WPL 2025 Match Review: Mumbai Indians Women defeat UP Warriorz by 8 wickets to take the lead

The Mumbai Indians Women put on a fantastic show in Match 11 of the Women’s Premier League (WPL) 2025, defeating the UP Warriorz Women by eight wickets on February 26 at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru.

After winning the toss, Mumbai Indians Women captain Harmanpreet Kaur decided to bowl first.

UP was unable to build their innings and only reached 142/9 in their 20 overs. The most outstanding player was Grace Harris, who scored a scorching 45 off 26 balls, while Dinesh Vrinda scored 33 off 30. MI’s top bowler was Nat Sciver-Brunt, who scored 3/18. Support was given by Sanskriti Gupta (2/11) and Shabnim Ismail (2/33).

The previous champions started slowly while chasing 143, but as Sciver-Brunt came to the crease, they took control. After Yastika Bhatia was dismissed early for a duck, Hayley Matthews (59 off 50) and Sciver-Brunt (75* off 44) combined for 133 runs, which won the match. Harmanpreet hit Sophie Ecclestone for a boundary to round off the triumph in stunning manner, finishing at 143/2 in just 17 overs. MI now leads the standings with six points from this resounding victory. However, the squad from UP comes in fourth.

Nat Sciver-Brunt’s outstanding all-around performance helped Mumbai win. She, Chinelle Henry, Shweta Sehrawat, and Kiran Navgire were all excellent with the ball, taking 3/18 in her four overs. She then smashed an unbeaten 75 off just 44 balls with 13 boundaries in a game-winning knock. Following the innings, Brunt became the season’s leading run scorer with 254 runs in four innings. For her performance, she was named Player of the Match.

West Indian hitter Hayley Matthews was instrumental in this game with a powerful 59 runs off 50 balls. Her innings, which included seven boundaries and two sixes, helped her team comfortably surpass the 143-run milestone. Despite losing her opening partner too soon, Matthews managed to keep the ship afloat. She made an important contribution before falling to Sophie Ecclestone, staying at the crease until the 16.5-over mark. Her 133-run partnership with Brunt was the high point of the chase.

The UP Warriorz Women, on the other hand, had a terrible batting collapse, managing just 142/9 in 20 overs. Even though Grace Harris scored 45 and Dinesh Vrinda scored 33, the middle order collapsed. Captain Deepti Sharma (4), Kiran Navgire (1), and Tahlia McGrath (1) did not contribute. Their top hitters weren’t performing well, therefore they lost.
