WPL 2024: Bengaluru crowds celebrate RCB's historic first-ever title, and footage goes viral

Following Royal Challengers Bangalore’s (RCB) historic victory over Delhi Capitals (DC) in the 2024 Women’s Premier League (WPL) at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi on March 17, fans in Bengaluru burst into ecstasies. With three balls left, RCB took the lead by eight wickets thanks to a masterful bowling effort.

Smriti Mandhana and company had a disappointing season in the tournament’s first year, finishing fourth in the points table with just two wins. However, their title victory was a tremendous comeback. But this year, they started off well and overcame numerous obstacles to advance to the knockout stage, setting off an incredible adventure. When it counted most, every player came through for the team and helped them win the historic title.

Following their incredible victory, supporters flocked to Bengaluru’s streets to celebrate their long-awaited glory. On social media, countless videos of the team’s supporters celebrating their enormous triumph went viral. In addition, Bengaluru was especially happy with this win because it was their first major triumph since the Indian Premier League began. Their men’s team has made it to the final three times, but they have never won a championship.

To win the WPL 2024 title, RCB defeated DC by eight wickets.

After winning the toss, Meg Lanning of the Delhi Capitals chose to bat first. They made a mistake, though, and collapsed on the first ball of the first inning. Leading the RCB’s bowling assault, Sophie Molineux removed Jemimah Rodrigues and Alice Capsey for ducks in back-to-back deliveries in the eighth over, having earlier removed Shafali Verma (44) in the opening delivery of the over. Afterwards, RCB defeated DC by a disappointing 113 runs in 18.3 overs because of the noteworthy performances of Shreyanka Patil and Asha Shobhana, who claimed four and two wickets, respectively.

Subsequently, with three balls left, Bangalore managed to chase down the goal thanks to the impressive efforts of Ellyse Perry (35*) and Richa Gosh (17*), who took over.
