Jhulan Goswami, the former captain of the Indian women’s team, recently expressed her happiness at the Women’s World Cup prize pool increase.
A total of USD 13.88 million in prize money was just announced by the ICC. Notably, USD 4.48 million will be awarded to the tournament’s victors.
In addition to pointing out that the expansion of the prize fund will serve as a “reassurance” to parents of aspiring female cricket players, Goswami proposed that the effort will significantly enhance women’s cricket.
“I am experiencing chills. It’s a great thing that the prize money has increased. I want to express my gratitude to the ICC. Given their approach, I am confident that women’s cricket will experience significant growth. It is also a comfort to the parents of [aspiring women cricket players] that this sport may be pursued and played professionally. According to The ICC Review, Jhulan Goswami said, “I think this is great news for women’s cricket and this will definitely motivate all the players as well.”
The long-term goal of the governing board was clarified by ICC chairman Jay Shah, who also discussed the rationale behind the action.
“This declaration represents a significant turning point in women’s cricket history. A significant milestone for women’s cricket, this four-fold increase in prize money shows our unwavering dedication to the sport’s long-term development. Our message is straightforward: if women decide to play cricket professionally, they need to be aware that they will be treated equally to males,” Shah continued.
USD 2.24 million will go to the runners-up, and USD 4.48 million to the champions. Each victory in the group stage phase will provide USD 34,314 in earnings, while the semi-finalists will receive USD 1.12 million. A guaranteed sum of USD 250,000 has been set out for each team. September 30 is the start date of the Women’s World Cup 2025.
