The 15-member England Women’s Cricket World Cup 2025 roster has been revealed. The competition will start on September 30. Nat Sciver-Brunt, rated #1 in the ICC Women’s ODI batting rankings, will be captaining England for the first time at an ICC event.
After missing several months owing to a tendon injury in her right hamstring, former captain Heather Knight is back in the team. After missing the India series earlier this summer, Sarah Glenn and Danielle Wyatt-Hodge both return to the English ODI team.
Sophie Ecclestone, the top women’s ODI bowler, will lead a formidable spin group that Glenn will join. Six players in the English team are expected to make their ODI World Cup debuts, including four specialist spinners. As England looks to duplicate their 2017 achievement, squad mainstays Tammy Beaumont, Sophia Dunkley, Amy Jones, Charlie Dean, and Linsey Smith hold onto their spots.
Head coach Charlotte Edwards said she was thrilled to see the squad announced, highlighting the challenge of playing in India and Sri Lanka as well as the honour of representing England in a World Cup. She also disclosed that in order to maximise the benefits of the wickets, they had to add a few extra spinners to their lineup due to the subcontinental conditions.
One of the greatest honours in sports is being chosen to represent your nation in a World Cup, and I’m happy for every player on the roster. It will be extremely difficult, like any international competitions, but we want to advance as far as we can in India, and I think we can compete with anyone if we play our best cricket,” Edwards stated in a statement.
We’ve gone for the extra spinner due to the circumstances, and we’re fortunate to have this department’s depth. It’s wonderful to see Sarah Glenn return. It will be frustrating for Kate Cross, Maia Bouchier, and Alice Davidson-Richards, as they will not have any space,” she continued.
Having won the first tournament in 1973, 1993, 2009, and 2017, the four-time world champions will be looking to add another trophy to their collection. On October 3, England will kick off their campaign against South Africa. Originally scheduled to take place in Bengaluru, this game might be moved due to security concerns.
Along with Heather, who we are thrilled to be able to choose, it’s fantastic to have Danni back in the lineup. She has been playing well in domestic cricket and will add energy and depth to our batting. We will greatly benefit from her,” Edwards stated.
“India is a fantastic site to play cricket, and we have a great chance to go there and achieve something unique as a team. The highest level of our sport is the ODI World Cup. We’re eager to travel there to begin our preparations because they only happen once every four years,” she said.
