Women's World Cup 2025: Bengaluru matches moved after stadium stampede

The renowned M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru will no longer host the ICC Women’s ODI World Cup in 2025. The tournament’s opening match and a potential semifinal have been rescheduled from the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium to Navi Mumbai’s DY Patil Stadium. The move was made in response to the terrible stampede that occurred at Royal Challengers Bengaluru’s (RCB) June IPL 2025 championship celebrations, which left over 50 people injured and 11 people dead.

The Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA) was rocked by the incident outside Chinnaswamy Stadium on June 4. To celebrate RCB’s first IPL triumph, thousands of fans flocked to the stadium, but poor crowd control caused mayhem that left dozens injured and several dead. The government blamed the franchise and KSCA for the incident, which caused indignation throughout the state.

Following the tragedy, a state-appointed committee deemed the location unsuitable for big parties. Since then, police have refused to allow the stadium to host important events. Even KSCA’s suggestion to hold competitions behind closed doors was turned down. The Maharaja T20 League had to be moved from Bengaluru to Mysuru as a result, which further demonstrated the government’s strict approach.

The Indian team has announced their 15 World Cup lineup.

KSCA was initially given several extensions by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) in order to obtain permissions from the local government and police. However, the BCCI and International Cricket Council (ICC) had to make a significant choice as a result of numerous failures. The participating teams were notified by the ICC on August 22 that the Bengaluru matches will henceforth be played in Navi Mumbai.

In addition to Colombo, which will host all of Pakistan’s matches as well as one semifinal and maybe the championship game, Mumbai now joins Indore, Visakhapatnam, and Guwahati as Indian host cities.

Although the tournament dates—September 30–November 2—remain the same, the updated schedule is anticipated to be made public shortly. Large matches, such as India’s first match and a knockout match, were initially assigned to Bengaluru; these will now be played in Navi Mumbai.

Once a frequent venue for international and IPL games, Chinnaswamy Stadium has not played host to a major event since the stampede in June. The credibility of KSCA has been questioned as a result of problems with power supply, regulatory clearances, and fire safety compliance.

In the meanwhile, if corrective action is not taken promptly, there are rising worries over whether the city will be able to host future IPL games or the men’s T20 World Cup matches next year. On August 19, the Indian team also unveiled its 15-man roster, with Harmanpreet Kaur expected to be the team’s captain.

the members of India’s World Cup team

Smriti Mandhana, Pratika Rawal, Harleen Deol, Deepti Sharma, Jemimah Rodrigues, Renuka Singh, Arundhati Reddy, Richa Ghosh, Kranti Goud, Amanjot Kaur, Radha Yadav, N Shree Charani, Yastika Bhatia, Sneh Rana, and Harmanpreet Kaur (C).

Tejal Hasabnis, Sayali Satghare, Minnu Mani, Uma Chetry (week), Prema Rawat, and Priya Mishra are standbys.
