The 2024 ICC Women’s T20 World Cup will take place in the United Arab Emirates instead of Bangladesh, as confirmed by the International Cricket Council (ICC). The event, which was originally supposed to happen in Dubai and Sharjah from October 3 to October 20.
This change was required because of the political unrest in the Asian country, as Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina resigned and fled, placing an interim administration in place. With the uncertain state of affairs and the rising number of fatalities and public disturbance, the decision to cancel the tournament seemed unavoidable.
Zimbabwe and Sri Lanka had surfaced as viable choices; nevertheless, the UAE was selected due to its suitable climate.
ICC Chief Executive Geoff Allardice stated, “We know the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) would have staged a memorable event, so it is a shame not to be hosting the Women’s T20 World Cup in Bangladesh.” “Travel advisories from the governments of several participating teams meant that wasn’t viable, but I would want to thank the BCB team for looking into every possibility to try to make it possible for the event to be hosted in Bangladesh. They will still have hosting rights, though. We’re excited to bring an ICC world tournament to Bangladesh sometime soon.
“We also thank Sri Lanka and Zimbabwe for their kind offers of support, and we look forward to seeing ICC global events in both of those countries in 2026. The Emirates Cricket Board stepped in to host on behalf of the BCB.”
When his current term ends at the end of November, ICC Chair Greg Barclay will step down, as he confirmed to the Board. He will not run for a third term. After being nominated in November 2020, Barclay was elected again in 2022 to serve as the Independent ICC Chair.

The next Chair will be chosen via an election if more than one current director nominates a candidate; the new Chair’s tenure will start on December 1. Current directors must submit nominations by August 27.
