Former England bowler David Willey, who has played for the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB), gave an explanation for why a number of seasoned international cricket players are reevaluating their choices. When the IPL and PSL conflict, there are fewer high-profile overseas players available, which lowers the demand for aged or underperforming stars.
A number of veteran cricket players from abroad have decided to sign up for the Pakistan Super League (PSL), which will be held within the same window as the Indian Premier League (IPL), rather than participate in the IPL 2026 auction. Prominent figures like Moeen Ali, Faf du Plessis, and Glenn Maxwell have made the unexpected decision to put the PSL ahead of the largest T20 competition in the world. Moeen joined the IPL in 2018, although du Plessis and Maxwell have been competitors since 2011 and 2013, respectively, and have both captained teams during their lengthy careers.
Another factor is the IPL auction’s competitiveness; fierce rivalry among younger, more successful players raises the possibility that well-known stars won’t be sold. Legends have also experienced similar setback; Chris Gayle, for example, was picked up as a substitute after going unsold at the 2011 auction.
Game time is another important factor. Due to the IPL’s stringent overseas-player cap and team configurations, many international players place a high emphasis on regular playing opportunities. One such example is Nathan Ellis, one of Australia’s best T20 bowlers, who, in spite of his skill, was benched for CSK for nearly the whole 2025 IPL season and played in just one game.
On the other hand, there is a greater chance of consistent playing time in the PSL. Even though the IPL could pay more, many seasoned cricket players find the PSL to be a more alluring option because it allows them to play more frequently.
It’s really personal, in my opinion. The outcome of the IPL auction is unpredictable. For players, I believe the PSL offers a little bit more security and assurance.
