In his most recent autobiography, former Indian cricketer Shikhar Dhawan related a personal experience about Rohit Sharma. There is a section in the book where the southpaw reflects on the time he surreptitiously brought his fiancée into the hotel room he shared with Rohit during the 2006 India A tour of Australia.
Shikhar Dhawan said that he met the woman after each game and that he thought they would be lifelong friends.
“She looked stunning, and all of a sudden I fell in love with her again! “She is the one for me, and I am going to marry her,” I told myself. My tour was going well, and I had opened with a half-century in a practice game. I would go over to meet Ellen (not her real name) after every game, and I quickly began sneaking her into the hotel room that Rohit Sharma and I shared. ‘Will you let me sleep?’ he would occasionally ask in Hindi, Shikhar Dhawan revealed in his memoirs.
He further disclosed how, after a national selector on tour had noticed the two together, his relationship with the woman caused a lot of agitation inside the group.
“When I went out to supper with Ellen one evening, word of her presence quickly circulated throughout the team. We were on tour when a senior national selector noticed us strolling through the lobby with our hands linked. Since I didn’t think we were breaking any laws, I didn’t even consider releasing her hand. I had a solid chance of making the senior Indian squad if I had played well during that Australia tour, but I kept losing ground,” Dhawan continued.
In 2010, Shikhar Dhawan finally made his debut for India. He went on to play at the top of the order for the country for an impressive twelve years. In 34 Test matches, 167 ODIs, and 68 T20Is, Dhawan played for the Indian squad.
