But following the exciting match, MI captain Hardik Pandya was spotted sobbing and collapsing to his knees following the loss, which sparked a lot of social media reactions.
Punjab Kings defeated the Mumbai Indians in Qualifier 2 of the IPL 2025, gaining a spot in the final after 11 years with one of the most spectacular run-chases in tournament history.
The Mumbai Indians scored 203/6 after being asked to bat first in Ahmedabad due to rain delays. Tilak Varma and Suryakumar Yadav, who each made 44 runs, formed a vital 72-run partnership after Jonny Bairstow gave MI a spectacular start with a 24-ball 38.
The team passed the 200-run milestone thanks to a late cameo from Naman Dhir, who scored 37 off just 18 balls. To prevent MI from topping 220 runs, PBKS bowlers Vijaykumar Vyshak, Kyle Jamieson, and Yuzvendra Chahal took wickets at regular intervals despite the scoring rate.
Prabhsimran Singh was dismissed cheaply, while Ashwani Kumar terminated Priyansh Arya’s cameo (20 off 10) as Punjab Kings’ chase got off to a bad start. Josh Inglis, a batsman and wicketkeeper, however, hit a fast 38 off 21, including 20 runs off the over of star pacer Jasprit Bumrah.
Following Hardik Pandya’s dismissal of Inglis, PBKS captain Shreyas Iyer and Nehal Wadhera put up an incredible 84-run partnership, with Iyer scoring 48 off 29. When facing MI’s bowlers, the two gave it their best. After that, Shreyas finished undefeated with an incredible 87 off just 41 balls, adding five fours and eight sixes to his innings. With a maximum in the 19th over, he completed the chase, setting a new record for the most successful chase in IPL history against the Mumbai Indians.
Hardik was clearly devastated by the defeat, as evidenced by the cameras capturing him collapsing to his knees following the winning six. One step short of the final, the captain appeared immobile when the season concluded. Bumrah, his teammate, dragged him to his feet and urged him to shake hands as is traditional after games. Hardik’s response became the most popular trend on X right away.

Credit to shreyas iyer for that brilliant knock. But the one thing that didn’t feel right was the bowling rotation by hardik pandya. Santer not completing his spell despite being economical. Lack of awareness #MIvPBKS #HardikPandya #Iyer pic.twitter.com/bkhsjFENZO
