Explained: Why did the Maharashtra government give Ajinkya Rahane the Bandra plot owned by Sunil Gavaskar?

India cricketer, Ajinkya Rahane has been away from international cricket for a while now. But the Mumbai cricketer is doing everything to aid the young cricketers of the state.

After this, a property in Mumbai’s Bandra neighbourhood has been given to the Maharashtra government for lease in order to build the sports facility. In 1988, Sunil Gavaskar, a former Indian legend, was given the 2000 square meters of land primarily to establish an indoor training center. The Indian legend, however, was unable to enter the business for over 30 years.

Consequently, the revenue department has granted star cricketer Ajinkya Rahane access to the site on a 30-year lease.

I did not withhold allocation due to Gavaskar’s prominence: Former Housing Minister

Even though Sunil Gavaskar was given the land, it was mostly left undeveloped for a long while. Slum inhabitants therefore exploited the plot for a variety of purposes. The plot was in terrible condition, and the Maharashtra Housing and Area Development Authority (MHADA) chose to give Rahane the property, according to a Telegraph India story.

Ajinkya Rahane has aspirations of building a cutting-edge sports center

“I was on the verge of withdrawing my request to have the 2,000 square metre Bandra site allocated to me. The intended cricket academy is massive and in a fantastic location, however it is not yet operational. In 2021, former Housing Minister Jitendra Awhad stated, “Gavaskar’s stature and his great contribution to the game meant that I did not cancel the allotment.”

Notably, Gavaskar abandoned the planned cricket academy, and in May 2022 the Sunil Gavaskar Cricket Foundation Trust returned the site to the state government.
