Gujarat Titans (GT) moved to the top of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 points table on Tuesday, May 6, after defeating Mumbai Indians (MI) by three wickets (DLS method) at the Wankhede Stadium.
After winning the toss, Shubman Gill chose to field first. Ryan Rickelton was sent packing by Mohammed Siraj, who struck off the second ball of the game. MI lost both of their openers for 26 runs when Arshad Khan removed Rohit Sharma in the fourth over. Will Jacks and Suryakumar Yadav took advantage of reprieves later in the game to form an important combination. However, they finished with just 155/8 on the board due to a batting collapse.
In an innings with two rain breaks, the Gujarat Titans required 15 runs off the final over after experiencing their own batting collapse. Rahul Tewatia struck Deepak Chahar for a four, then Gerald Coetzee hit him for a six. MI suffered when the right-arm bowler bowled a no ball as well. Arshad Khan needed to score one run off the last delivery, thus Coetzee was removed off the penultimate ball. At mid-off, Hardik Pandya wasted a run-out opportunity at the non-striker’s end when the former MI player hammered one to him.
Talking Points
1. Rashid Khan appears to be getting back to his previous level.
For Gujarat, Rashid Khan bowled a fantastic stint in the middle overs. He silenced Suryakumar and Jacks, the menacing duo. Jacks, the leading scorer for MI, was removed by the Afghan mainstay. Rashid took one wicket and gave up just 21 runs in his four overs. He told the commentators during the mid-innings break that he felt between seventy and seventy-five percent of his former self.
2. MI returns to the game thanks to Jasprit Bumrah’s genius.
With eight wickets remaining and just 49 runs needed off the final six overs, the Gujarat Titans were dominating during the first rain break. After the rain break, Shubman and Sherfane Rutherford wanted to take GT home. But the floodgates opened when Jasprit Bumrah bowled a peach to castle the GT captain. In addition to taking out Shahrukh Khan, the seasoned seamer finished with an incredible 2/19 in his four overs.
3. Both teams’ batting collapses
Remarkably, MI and GT experienced comparable batting collapses. MI’s partnership for the third wicket produced 71 runs off 43 balls. They fell to 123/7, though, from 97/2. At 113/2, GT was comfortably in the middle of its run-chase. But in order to limit the visitors to 126/6, Bumrah and his colleagues MI bowlers bowled with a great deal of grit and effort.
Who Said What?
Hardik Pandya, MI (Losing Captain)
I think we fought really well, we kept pushing as a group. I think it wasnt’t a 150 wicket, but we were short by 25 runs. Credit to the bowlers as they kept fighting (throughout the innings.). Dropped catches do bite you, but the catches didn’t bite us much. Really happy with the boys giving their 120 percent in the field and not giving up. The ground wasn’t wet in the first innings, but it was difficult for us as the rain kept coming in (during the second innings.) We had to play the game and we did that.
Shubman Gill, GT (Winning Captain and Player of the Match)
There was a little bit of chaos when we came into bat after the train but always good to have a W on your side. The game plans were different in the powerplay, the atmosphere such that it felt like a Test match. We wanted to take the game on after the powerplay but the rain kept coming. The wicket was a little bit slow, with the rain coming in, the shots were not easy to hit so we thought, when it’s in our zone, we were go for it.
It was frustrating, we were ahead at one stage but we lost 4/20. But, the universe gave us a chance and we took it. When the match goes till the last ball when you chase 150, every contribution becomes important. Wins like these get you through in these big tournaments like IPL. He is coming back from injury, it’s not easy. Thoughts like these can creep in but we need to take every game at is. It’s about coming in and giving your everything when you come into play.
