Against Scotland in Match 2 of the ICC Women’s World Cup Qualifier 2025 in Lahore, Pakistan, West Indies skipper Hayley Matthews put on an incredible display with the bat and the ball. Her valiant efforts were ultimately vain, as the West Indies squad lost a heart-stopping match by 11 runs.
Scotland was bowled out after batting first and scoring a respectable 244 runs in 45 overs. With a solid 55 off 56 deliveries, wicketkeeper-batter Sarah Bryce led the innings, although the other batters all made valuable contributions. Throughout a complete 10-over period, the West Indies captain led from the front with the ball. She stopped Scotland’s momentum by taking four wickets for 56 runs.
West Indies found it difficult to form reliable alliances in response.
At one end, wickets continued to tumble, but the opener resisted and battled with just one hand. Despite having cramps, she shown incredible fortitude and tenacity. She eventually had to be carried off the pitch on a stretcher because of the discomfort, but she went back to the crease.
Cramps couldn’t stop her. But the scoreboard did 😔
