The West Indies almost missed qualifying for the Women’s World Cup 2025 on the last day of the Women’s ODI Qualifiers in Lahore. Despite their best efforts, the West Indies were unable to defeat Thailand, chasing down 167 runs in just 10.5 overs.
In WODIs, this is the earliest a team has accomplished their goal while pursuing a target of more than 150. In addition, WI captain Hayley Matthews reached her fifty off of just 21 deliveries, becoming her the second-fastest player in WODI history to reach the milestone, following Deandra Dottin (20 balls).
Pakistan defeated Bangladesh by seven wickets earlier today to continue their undefeated streak in the Qualifiers. Although Pakistan was already qualified, Bangladesh would have advanced with a victory, negating the need for the match between Thailand and the West Indies.
West Indies concluded with a net run-rate of 0.639, while Bangladesh finished with six points each.
Conversely, WI ended with a net run-rate of 0.626. A mere 0.013 difference! Bangladesh will therefore represent the West Indies in the major event later this year.
This is only the second time the West Indies have failed to qualify for the World Cup since they first participated in it in 1993. Additionally, they did not make it to the 2000 World Cup. Later this year, perhaps in September or October, India will host the Women’s ODI World Cup.
The following teams have advanced to the Women’s ODI World Cup 2025: Bangladesh, India, Australia, South Africa, England, New Zealand, and Sri Lanka.
