Twitter Reactions: West Indies clean sweep South Africa after comfortable win in 3rd T20I

On Monday, May 27, in the third and final Twenty20 International, Johnson Charles’ brilliant half-century helped the West Indies defeat a hopeless South African team by eight wickets in Kingston, Jamaica. With this lopsided win, the two-time T20 World Cup winners finished the Proteas’ 3-0 rout.

Given that the surface appeared to be ideal for batting, Rassie van der Dussen chose to bat first after winning the toss. Nevertheless, Reeza Hendricks, who was in fine form, was dismissed cheaply in the second over after mistiming a pull off Shamar Joseph’s bowling. Before being removed for eighteen in the final powerplay over, Ryan Rickelton struck a barrage of boundaries. After failing to find his rhythm, veteran Quinton de Kock fell victim to Gudakesh Motie in the seventh over. With the visitors reeling at 50/4 in the ninth over, the left-arm spinner removed Matthew Breetzke in his next over.

In order to salvage the innings, Van der Dussen performed a captain’s knock under duress and put together a crucial 77-run partnership with Wiaan Mulder off 49 balls. When South Africa reached 127, the latter left in the 17th over. Before being removed in the 19th over, Van der Dussen proceeded to make his ninth half-century in T20I cricket. In their final 20 overs, South Africa finished at 163/7 thanks to a few boundaries struck by Patrick Kruger.

Johnson. To make the run chase easier, Charles pulverises the Proteas bowling.

Johnson Charles took the South African bowlers to task, helping the hosts to 49/0 in the first three overs after they had struggled to score in the opening several games. In the sixth over, the 35-year-old needed just 19 balls to hit his half-century. West Indies reduced the needed run-rate to below six with a powerplay score of 83/0. After hitting an incredible 69 runs off of 26 balls, including nine fours and five sixes, Charles was out of the game in the seventh over.

Before being removed for a 28-ball 44 by Gerald Coetzee, captain Brandon King displayed some lovely strokes. The Caribbean side triumphed with eight wickets and 37 balls remaining thanks to Kyle Mayers’ display of big-hitting skill, which included four sixes in his performance of 36 not out off 23 balls.

Player of the Match went to Charles, and rightly. In the meantime, Motie emerged victorious as the series’ top wicket-taker with eight scalps, earning him the title of Player of the Series.
