West Indies announce ODI team for England series; Shimron Hetmyer returns

Shimron Hetmyer, a powerful middle-order batsman, has been invited back to the West Indies’ ODI squad for the forthcoming three-match series against England, which begins in Antigua on October 31. The sole alteration to the team that recently faced Sri Lanka is the southpaw, who takes the place of opener Alick Athanaze.

Hetmyer, who missed the Sri Lanka tour for personal reasons, returns after playing a significant role in the West Indies’ 2-1 triumph against England in their most recent ODI series in December 2023. Hetmyer finished as the fifth-highest run scorer in the Caribbean Premier League (CPL) 2024 and is feeling quite confident.

The hosts, meanwhile, will try to play better cricket at home after losing to Sri Lanka 2-1 in the series. Shai Hope, the team’s captain, will continue to lead it, and Jewel Andrew, 17, will keep his spot after making his debut in the Sri Lanka series.

Daren Sammy, the head coach of the West Indies, talked candidly about the two countries’ long-standing rivalry and expressed excitement about the impending battle.

“Playing England always brings a fresh challenge and rekindles a rivalry that the Caribbean’s players and people look forward to.” When we play England, we West Indies always manage to step up our game,” Daren Sammy stated, as reported.

The series will start with two One-Day Internationals (ODIs) in Antigua’s Sir Vivian Richards Stadium on October 31 and November 2, and end on November 6 at Barbados’ Kensington Oval.

In lieu of Jos Buttler, who is still recovering from a calf injury, Liam Livingstone will captain England, who have already reached the Caribbean. Regarding the future, Sammy emphasised the series’ significance to West Indies’ long-term strategies.

“This rivalry dates back decades, and we’re prepared to take on a formidable England team once more after defeating them at home in an ODI series last year for the first time in a long time. Playing at home is always unique because of the enthusiasm and energy that the local crowd provides to every game. We’ve chosen a well-rounded team that will undoubtedly challenge and contend with one of the top teams in the world, as we aim to qualify for the ICC Men’s World Cup in 2027,” Sammy continued.

The team keeps a balance between youth and experience, with youthful players like Shamar Joseph and Matthew Forde playing alongside more seasoned players like Brandon King and Alzarri Joseph. With a spectacular unbeaten 102 off 61 balls in his ODI comeback against Sri Lanka, opener Evin Lewis also keeps his spot.

West Indies ODI squad:
Shai Hope (capt), Jewel Andrew, Keacy Carty, Roston Chase, Matthew Forde, Shimron Hetmyer, Alzarri Joseph, Shamar Joseph, Brandon King, Evin Lewis, Gudakesh Motie, Sherfane Rutherford, Jayden Seales, Romario Shepherd, Hayden Walsh Jr
