According to R Ashwin, India has lost the current five-match Test series against England because of a lack of game understanding. But as he gains more experience, he thinks Shubman Gill will only get better as a captain.
Despite playing some outstanding cricket against a formidable England team in the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy, India is facing a 1-3 series loss. After veterans like Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli retired from the longest format in the run-up to the series, Shubman faced a formidable task. But in addition to inspiring the young players on his team to fight fire with fire in the face of overwhelming odds, he had an incredible series with the bat.
“India’s lack of game knowledge and, in many respects, our tactical skill both on and off the field are the sole reasons why England is leading this series and India is not. We have not been the most observant. Ashwin stated on ‘Ash ki Baat’ that he believes Shubman Gill will improve as a captain and gain knowledge.
Additionally, Ashwin said Shubman was at fault for failing to activate his spinners when it was time. The former cricket player for India claimed that a spinner may have been used to counter Harry Brook’s destructive style.
“As a captain, you may not always call on the spinner when you believe you can play spin well. Additionally, it turns into a defensive option if you lose the opportunity to position the spinner. You might have choked a spinner by bowling him from one end when Harry Brook began to take it on. “This trick was also missed in the previous game, and spin should have come quickly,” he continued.
With his subsequent 111 off 98 balls, Brook completely destroyed the quick bowlers. The game was altered by his partnership with Joe Root, which saw him score 195 runs off 211 deliveries. Root put England in a great position with his 39th Test century.
Bowling to increase pressure is a lost art, which puts them in this predicament: R Ashwin
In the fourth innings, India had given England a target of 374 to chase. India’s hopes have been harmed, according to Ashwin, by their inability to apply pressure on the hitters by setting the right fields and bowling defensively.
“That’s a lot of runs, and it’s such a large score on this pitch. Bowling to generate pressure is a lost art, which puts them in this predicament. Many teams are having trouble, not just India. We refer to this as defensive pressure building. We only look to take wickets because of T20. You will give up a lot of runs if you solely bowl for wickets. When you develop rhythm and pressure, wickets fall. Siraj delivered a maiden over and Prasidh got into a solid rhythm, which culminated to his wicket. He clarified, “We are not bowling defensively at the appropriate times and setting the right fields.”
