Babar Azam has been having a lot of trouble lately, and the PSL 2025 game between Multan Sultans and Peshawar Zalmi was no exception. On Saturday, April 19, Babar Azam left the game at Rawalpindi after just a few runs, demonstrating his lack of effort once more.
In the match that had to be won, Peshawar batted first and were already in trouble when opener Saim Ayub left after scoring a few runs in the second over. The ship sank further when Babar Azam left after only six balls after failing to read a straight delivery from David Willey, despite the fans’ expectations that he would take charge and steady the ship. Without hesitation, the umpire gave the finger, forcing the captain to retreat.

Babar Azam has now only managed three runs from as many games after yet another lacklustre batting performance. He scored a single in the second game, a two-ball duck in the first, and a few more runs in the match against the Sultans. Since he is regarded by both fans and professionals as the best Pakistani batter of the present age, these statistics are extremely alarming for someone of his calibre.
Similar to Babar, the Peshawar team isn’t enjoying his leadership either. They did, however, defeat the Sultans, who are currently the only team in the league’s tenth edition without a victory. With vital batting contributions from Tom Kohler-Cadmore (52 off 30), Mohammad Haris (45 off 21), Mitchell Owen (34 off 15), and Abdul Samad (40 off 14), the team scored 227 runs. Babar & Co. won by 120 runs as the bowlers performed their duties and knocked out the previous season’s finalists for a mere 107 runs.
Peshawar hopes that Babar Azam will return.
In the previous three seasons of the competition, the Peshawar Zalmi have advanced to the PSL playoffs. In the previous two editions, their 30-year-old batter was likewise one of the team’s leading run producers. With 569 runs in 11 games played and an average of 56.90, Babar was the tournament’s best run scorer the previous season.
After his team lost the second eliminator to eventual champions Islamabad United, the Lahore native finished third with a strike rate of 142.60 and five half-centuries and one century that season. To increase their chances of victory, the Zalmi will need to hope that the star batsman would resume his previous level of performance.
