[WATCH] ENG vs IND 2025: Rishabh Pant visibly upset as umpires reject India’s ball replacement appeal at Headingley

On the third day of the first Test match against England at Headingley, Leeds, Indian vice captain Rishabh Pant became irate with the umpires. When Rishabh Pant pointed out a lack of swing and pleaded for a change of the old ball in the 60th over, the incident happened.

Rishabh Pant threw the ball out of fury after the umpire rejected his request.

The officials upheld their ruling despite Jasprit Bumrah’s participation in the petition to replace the ball.

India had earlier amassed 471 runs in the first innings, supported by three outstanding hundreds. Rishabh Pant played a knock of 134 off 178 deliveries, captain Shubman Gill anchored the innings with a strong 147 off 227, while Yashasvi Jaiswal hit 101 off 159 balls.

India had a solid base, but on the morning of Day 2, they collapsed dramatically, losing seven wickets for just 41 runs. With four wickets apiece, Ben Stokes and Josh Tongue were England’s best players.

Zak Crawley was easily removed, and England’s innings got off to a rough start. But with a 122-run partnership for the second wicket, Ben Duckett and Ollie Pope kept the score steady. Pope went on to reach his century, while Duckett hit 62 before being removed.

Pope was removed for 106 on the morning of Day 3 as Prasidh Krishna struck early. England continued to take an aggressive stance in spite of the initial setback. Harry Brook was instrumental, forming two vital partnerships with Stokes and Jamie Smith that lasted more than fifty runs. Smith was on 29* during lunch, and Brook was still undefeated on 57*.

With Brook and Smith at the crease, England kept up their momentum at the lunch break on Day 3. Siraj and Krishna each contributed one wicket, but Bumrah spearheaded India’s bowling effort with three.
