India posted competitive totals in both innings thanks to Gill’s efforts. The red-ball captain scored 42.41% of the runs, or more than 40%. The two knocks added up to a total of eleven sixes and 43 fours. With this, Gill broke a number of records and established himself as one of the best Test cricket players. Additionally, it was the first time that India had scored more than 1,000 runs overall in both innings (1,014–687 in the first innings; 427 in the second).
However, Mohammed Siraj and Akash Deep also had fantastic games, so it wasn’t just Gill who attended the celebration. In England’s first innings, Siraj and Deep took six and four wickets, respectively, to give their team a crucial 180-run advantage. In addition to having the best Test match results by an Indian versus England in England, Deep finished the game with career-best match test figures of 10/187.
With the series tied at one apiece, the two teams will now play each other at Lord’s. The goal for Gill and company would be to build on their momentum and carry it into the third game. At the Home of Cricket, however, England would be eager to improve their performance and put up a stronger display with the bat and ball. On Thursday, July 10, the game is expected to start.
