At Chepauk, Afghanistan defeats Pakistan.
On Monday, October 23, at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai, the 22nd match of the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023, Afghanistan displayed their supremacy by sweeping Pakistan by an eight-wicket margin. Pakistan decided to bat first and set a challenging target of 282/7 in their 50 overs. Babar Azam spearheaded the effort with a skillfully produced 74 runs off 92 deliveries.
Rahmanullah Gurbaz and Ibrahim Zadran, Afghanistan’s openers, put on a strong partnership that helped them start their chase with a formidable 130 runs for the first wicket off 127 balls. However, Pakistan was given some optimism when Shaheen Afridi made a breakthrough and dismissed Gurbaz for 65 off 53 balls in the 22nd over.
Despite the setback, Zadran and Rahmat Shah partnered up, scoring 60 runs for the second wicket before Hasan Ali removed Zadran in the 34th over. Together with Shah, captain Hashmatullah Shahidi led Afghanistan to victory with an outstanding 96-run partnership. Shahidi came into the game at number four and remained unbeaten.
Abdullah Shafique and Imam-ul-Haq’s powerful opening combination in Pakistan’s first innings provided a good platform, but an outstanding bowling effort from the Afghans, especially Noor Ahmad, who made his World Cup debut with figures of 3/49, restricted Pakistan to 282/7. Despite the setbacks, Shadab Khan and Iftikhar Ahmed’s contributions helped Pakistan’s overall score.
With their third victory in the ODI World Cup’s history, Afghanistan’s sweeping victory cemented their standing as a formidable opponent.
