"Time is everything" is Wasim Jaffer's cheeky response to Michael Vaughan's idea for a two-division Test system

Wasim Jaffer, a former Indian opener, and Michael Vaughan, the captain of England, have a long-standing, friendly rivalry on social media where they frequently joke about. Jaffer responded smartly to Vaughan’s recent suggestion of a thorough reorganisation of Test cricket.

In order to achieve a more equitable distribution of money and a balance of competitiveness among the nations who play Test cricket, Vaughan suggested splitting the sport into two divisions. Following England’s thrilling series victory over Sri Lanka, in which they took a 2-0 lead with one game left, Vaughan has put forth this proposition. Due to a few nations routinely surpassing others in Test cricket, Vaughan claimed that the existing structure of the game is biassed due to England’s supremacy in the series.

“Test cricket needs to be 2 Divisions of 6 ASAP .. and spread the wealth of the game more evenly across all countries,” he said next to his handle.

Wasim Jaffer shared a screenshot of the World Test Championship (WTC) 2024–25 rankings in response to Vaughan’s tweet. The screenshot showed England lagging behind India in a 1-4 series defeat.

“Time is of the essence. And Michael knows that, being a wise man. That’s the reason he didn’t tweet this when the WTC table looked like this a month ago,” Jaffer said, albeit in a light-hearted and sarcastic way.

India set to play Bangladesh for two-match Test series

England’s performance in Test cricket has been inconsistent lately. They lost the series to India, but they won over Sri Lanka and the West Indies to get back on track and move up to fourth in the WTC rankings.

India, meanwhile, continues to lead the standings with ease and will play Bangladesh in a two-match Test series later this month. After a poor white-ball tour in Sri Lanka, India’s new head coach Gautam Gambhir is keen to get the team back to winning ways. This will be the team’s maiden series together.
