Washington Freedom, undefeated, secure a top-two finish

Washington Freedom Texas Super Kings were easily defeated by Freedom by a score of 42 runs. On a used pitch, Freedom captain Steve Smith elected to bat first, and both sides brought in a spinner as expected.

After hitting two half-centuries going into the match, Travis Head (53), who was in fine form, added another fifty. In the third and fourth overs, he showed a preference for Zia-ul-Haq and Marcus Stoinis, hitting them for 15 and 22 runs, respectively.

In just 20 balls, he reached his 50. After Freedom reached 50 in just four overs, Super Kings captain Faf du Plessis was compelled to substitute Noor Ahmad. He got rid of Head right away when he was enticed by a tossed-up delivery, and the slog sweep led to an easy catch at deep midwicket.

In the next two overs, the Super Kings claimed two wickets; Dwayne Bravo trapped Andries Gous in front of him off a full delivery, then Noor caught Rachin Ravindra off his own bowling. Glenn Maxwell and Smith rotated the strike for a few overs as the wickets were falling regularly, with the occasional boundary setting up a solid finish.

After Noor castled Maxwell, Obus Pienaar entered and produced a scorching cameo of 33 off 21 deliveries. Through the chaos at the other end, Smith performed the ideal anchor role, reaching his fifty in the eighteenth over. Pienaar took Stoinis for two maximums to end the innings and push the Freedom above 200 runs in the last over.

With Devon Conway and Faf du Plessis, two of the team’s most effective hitters, the Super Kings appeared to be aggressive in the Powerplay as well.  After completing the first two overs, the pair hit Jansen for fifteen runs in the third over.

Washington Freedom decision to bring in Maxwell in the fourth over proved to be very effective, as they quickly trapped Conway in front of them.

Du Plessis seized control against Amila Aponso by striking three sixes and a four with 22 off the over at an asking rate of more than 10 from the outset. Super Kings had won the Powerplay 76-1. In the seventh over, du Plessis reached his fifty runs off of just 19 balls.

With some quiet overs, Freedom was able to recover, and they also got rid of Aaron Hardie, who was hurried onto the pull, and Joshua Tromp, who holed out too far off due to the mounting strain. The big fish of Faf du Plessis was caught by Jasdeep Singh, who was called to replace Saurabh Netravalkar while he was out on paternity leave. Singh was tricked by a slower ball outside off that was hit straight to long off.

After Dwayne Bravo, Marcus Stoinis, and Milind Kumar were easily fired, things got worse. At 3 for 25 in his 4 overs, Jasdeep Singh was one of the bowlers that was most easily picked off. Calvin Savage (35), however, had ran out of partners on the opposite end despite his best efforts to get TSK to go deep. Rachin Ravindra returned in the final over, taking two of his four wickets for the day, and ensuring his team’s comfortable 42-run victory.
