The 33rd match of the current ODI World Cup 2023 took place at Mumbai’s Wankhede Stadium between India and Sri Lanka. The Mumbai audience erupted in “Kohli Ko Ball Do (Give the ball to Kohli)” during the Sri Lankan team’s batting innings in the second innings of the match.

They even imitated Rohit Sharma’s bowling action, pleading with him to enable Virat Kohli to bowl.

This followed the top order of Sri Lanka’s dismal performance in the match, as they were unable to overcome the fast bowling of India.

Prior to the game, in the sweltering Mumbai heat, Sri Lankan captain Kusal Mendis won the toss and elected to field first. Dilshan Madhushanka’s stunning outswinger on the first ball of the game gave India a bad start by removing their captain, Rohit Sharma.

But Shubman Gill and Virat put together a solid partnership of 189 runs for the second wicket, creating the illusion that either player could reach a century. After Madushanka eventually removed both players, Gill amassed 92 runs and Kohli 88. Then, Shreyas Iyer entered the game and immediately began to target the Sri Lankan bowlers, smashing six sixes and three fours in a fast 82 off just 56 balls. In the latter stages, Ravindra Jadeja also contributed some strong strokes to the Indian team’s enormous 357 runs in 50 overs.

The Sri Lankan hitters, in turn, found it difficult to counter India’s pace attack. The match began with Jasprit Bumrah drawing first blood on the opening ball. Mohammed Shami and Mohammed Siraj then wrecked havoc on the Sri Lankan team. In the tournament, Shami claimed five more wickets, Siraj three, and Sri Lanka was bowled out for a mere fifty-five runs. India prevailed in the match by a score of 302 runs, and Shami was named Man of the Match in recognition of his superb bowling effort.
