Wanindu Hasaranga discusses Bangladesh's weak batting after loss
Wanindu Hasaranga, the captain of Sri Lanka, laid the blame for their team’s poor performance at the hands of Bangladesh in the ongoing T20 World Cup 2024 on their hitters. The Lankan Lions were in trouble after losing two early wickets while batting first, but Pathum Nissanka maintained one end. Despite scoring 47 runs off of 28 deliveries, the opener received little help from the opposition.

Following his removal, Dhananjaya de Silva and Charith Asalanka attempted, but were unable, to steady Sri Lanka’s batting. Spinner Rishad Hossain waived his magic during the middle overs, ruining them for Sri Lanka. He took two wickets in rapid succession, forcing Sri Lanka to fold. They eventually scored 124 runs, but that was insufficient.

Bangladesh lost a few wickets in the chase but still managed to stay in control of the match. A pivotal 63-run combination between Litton Das and Towhid Hridoy was essential to their victory. After the game, Wanindu Hasaranga claimed that the batters’ inability to take advantage of the middle overs cost them the game.

“In the first ten overs, we batted well, but in the middle overs, we struggled.” Our strength is bowling. We could have won with our bowling attack if we had scored 150–160. In both games, the hitters disappointed us. We shall give it our all in the two games we have left. In the post-match presentation, Hasaranga stated, “Maheesh and I are the two main spinners, and we have to attack.”

There are still two games left for Sri Lanka in the competition: their next encounter is on June 12 against Nepal, and their final match is on June 17 against the Netherlands. Though winning their next two games will secure the Lankan Lions’ berth in the Super 8, advancement is not assured. With two points apiece for Bangladesh, the Netherlands, and South Africa and no points yet for Sri Lanka and Nepal, Group D is currently looking tight.
