A fussless On a night of wasted starts, Matthew Wade defied the norm as the Hobart Hurricanes defeated the Melbourne Renegades for the second time in eight days.
With one over and four wickets left, the Hurricanes veteran finished the innings undefeated on 43 off 20 balls, striking a six and four off successive deliveries to help the hosts surpass the 164-run mark.
Wade maintained composure as Adam Zampa (3-25), Hassan Khan (1-11), and Andrew Tye (1-29) helped put the visitors in the box seat on Monday night, even though no other batter reached 30.
Tim Ward and Ben McDermott were removed by Zampa in the ninth over, leaving the Hurricanes 59 for 3. However, a 38-run partnership between Wade and Rehan Ahmed (23) put the home team back in the game.
With three sixes and a four from the final eight balls of the innings, Wade was unflappable after Rehan left.
The Hurricanes now have a 4-1 record this BBL season after their victory a week ago, while the Renegades (1-2) are still at the bottom of the standings.
When Josh Brown (26 off 13) took 16 off the first over and Tim Seifert (26 off 14) followed suit in a menacing one-two punch, the Renegades’ innings looked different.
Nathan Ellis’ slower back-of-the-hand ball (3-30) outwitted Brown, but Mohammad Rizwan (16 off 12) kept up the tempo by putting his first delivery to the midwicket barrier.
Oliver Peake (29 off 22) and Jake Fraser-McGurk (14 off 8) both appeared dangerous, but like the top three, neither was able to get going. Rishad Hossain, a legspinner for Bangladesh, took two wickets for 34.
Due to their inability to launch, the Renegades were forced to grind to 162 for 9 from their 20 overs.
