In order to help their teams win more games and bring in more spectators to the stadiums, young cricket players were advised by Virender Sehwag to take an aggressive batting tack in Test matches.
Notably, Ben Stokes and head coach Brendon McCullum have made England’s approach to Test cricket incredibly aggressive. With their run rate of 4.61 runs per over since June 2022, the Three Lions have been the team with the highest run rate in Test matches. Sehwag has praised Australia’s aggressive purpose in the early 2000s and England’s “Bazball” style of play, claiming that it helps them win more games.
“The style in which England is scoring five runs per over in Test cricket. Australia used to score four runs per over when we were playing. I’ve always thought that your team has a better chance of winning Test matches if you can attack,” Sehwag was cited by India Today.
During his era, Virender Sehwag was among the most assertive batters. Playing 104 Tests and scoring 8586 runs at an average of 49.34, he finished with an incredible strike rate of 82.23.
“Therefore, why not, if someone creates an aggressive game that works for Test cricket? We want people to come see Tests, after all. Was it a good or poor experience? I made a triple tonne in about 270 balls. If today’s youth played that many balls, they could score 400,” he remarked.
With a minimum strike of 2500 runs, the cricketer-turned-commentator holds the record for highest strike in the history of the international red-ball game. In Tests, the 45-year-old has amassed six double hundreds and the joint-highest triple hundreds (two). With his unrelenting Sehwag made the game’s longest format fascinating, and he anticipates the younger players will adopt a similar strategy.

Yashasvi Jaiswal has demonstrated a recent preference for playing aggressive cricket during Test matches. In nine Test matches, the 22-year-old has scored runs at an impressive strike rate of 70.07. He has been likened to Sehwag by many due to his audacious style of batting during Test matches.
