When asked who he is rooting for in the final, former India opener and PBKS captain Virender Sehwag had a hilarious answer.
The most frequently questioned issue as the IPL 2025 draws to a close is who will finally break their title jinx, when Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) and Punjab Kings (PBKS) square off in Ahmedabad’s massive Narendra Modi Stadium on Tuesday.
Two of the original teams from the 2008 IPL season, RCB and PBKS, have not taken home the championship. While PBKS lost their lone final match against the Kolkata Knight Riders in 2014, RCB has lost three finals in 2009, 2011, and 2016. In the meantime, Virender Sehwag offered an intriguing perspective about the club he supports when he was questioned about his prediction for the championship game.
“RCB will win, in my opinion. I have reverted to my previous performance since I have witnessed my team, whether it be GT in the match against MI or Punjab Kings in the Qualifier 1 match versus RCB, consistently lose. I saw MI vs. PBKS in qualification 2 today, but they lost. This also applies to the Indian squad.
They lost that match after I publicly backed them,” Virender Sehwag stated on Cricbuzz.
The former admitted that the team he backs always loses, and he subtly implied that he is supporting PBKS while using RCB’s moniker to help them lose the summit match. After defeating PBKS handily in Qualifier 1, the Bengaluru-based team advanced to the championship game. Shreyas Iyer later led his team to victory over the Mumbai Indians in Qualifier 2, setting up an exciting rematch.
Virat Kohli, who has represented the team’s aspirations and values for almost 20 years, is one step away from bringing an end to the wait, making the forthcoming final potentially historic for RCB. Captain Iyer has been leading from the front, and PBKS has found their hero in him.
