Reports: Virat Kohli's selection for England tour to depend on Shubman Gill

Virat Kohli, the star batsman for India, has come under fire in recent months due to his unimpressive performances in the game’s longest format. In nine innings of the just finished Border-Gavaskar Trophy, he was only able to score 190 runs. As a result, the New Delhi native is now under even more scrutiny.

On Saturday, January 11, at the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) headquarters in Mumbai, the All India Men’s Senior Selection Committee, captained by Ajit Agarkar, convened to decide on the T20I team for the England series. The future of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli following their ongoing batting slump was another crucial issue being discussed.

According to a recent Hindustan Times story, Virat Kohli future in the Test team will be determined by Shubman Gill’s performance in the near future.

Five months remain until the five-Test series against England, so the selectors will probably consider the situation before making a decision. Unlike how prepared Kohli was when Sachin Tendulkar hung up his boots, Shubman Gill hasn’t adapted to the role of Kohli as planned. “Agarkar’s selection committee will take this into consideration,” the report stated.

According to the same source, BCCI joint secretary Devajit Saikia and former BCCI secretary and ICC chairperson Jay Shah were present at the board’s review meeting, which was also attended by the head coach, captain, and top selector. Prior to determining the meeting’s outcome, participants engaged in a lengthy debate about the Kohli-Gill team.

The Champions Trophy in 2025 may be the last 50-over international competition in which Rohit and Kohli will compete. India will like to improve their performance and boost their morale compared to the previous several months.
