The retirements of Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma from Test cricket will bring about a significant shift in the Indian cricketing community. Ahead of the forthcoming England visit, a number of cricket commentators have expressed their thoughts on the two players’ choices. However, Sunil Gavaskar is not shocked by the announcement of his retirement from Test cricket.
In the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024–25, Virat Kohli amassed 200 runs, including a century in the opening Test.
In contrast, Indian captain Rohit amassed a pitiful 31 runs from three games at a pitiful average of 6.20. A bad Test tour to Australia, according to the 75-year-old, was the last straw for Rohit and Virat, who have now justifiably hung their boots in the red-ball format.
“Whether or not to play is a personal choice. However, I’m not shocked because I anticipated significant changes following the events in Australia. According to India Today, Gavaskar stated, “I’m not surprised he decided to call it a day.”
Everyone wants to leave on their own terms: Gavaskar
In addition, Gavaskar stated that there may have been discussions about the two cricketing greats’ futures with the BCCI and the selectors, and that the public would have preferred that they retire on their own terms rather than being removed from the team.
That’s precisely what would have taken place. Discussions and interactions with them would have taken place. They would have spoken with senior board officials, the chairman of selectors, and the selectors themselves. I stated that this was not surprising to me, at least not to me. There would have undoubtedly been discussions with both of them because their removal from the squad is the one thing that no one would have wanted to witness. That would never have been desired,” Gavaskar continued.
“Everyone wanted these two amazing cricket players to retire on their own terms. The former India opener came to the conclusion, “They have left after telling the world they have had enough.”
