Virat Kohli did not behave like he usually did when he took the pitch for India in the T20 World Cup of 2024. The legendary batter has struggled to settle into his new role ever since giving up his designated third slot. Despite collecting 73 runs in eight games, he has only managed one outing when batting outside of the powerplay. Prior to the game against South Africa, former England spinner Monty Panesar predicted that the right-handed batter would score a century in the Barbados final.
As the league’s leading run scorer and a former captain of India, he has experience batting first for Royal Challengers Bengaluru in the Indian Premier League. The white-ball maestro seems to have been asked to do more by the slow and lazy pitches of the Caribbean and the USA, and skipper Rohit Sharma has also shown faith in the player’s ability. Rohit not only went through a dry stretch early on with the bat, but he also rebuilt his swing as the knockout stages drew near.
The Times of India cited Panesar as saying, “India will win the T20 World Cup final, and Virat Kohli will score 100.”
Form is never a problem, says Rohit Sharma.
“Player Virat Kohli has skill. That’s something that any player can encounter. We realise his class and acknowledge his significance in all these big games. Form is never hard to work with. Form has never been a problem for me in fifteen years of playing cricket. He looks nice, has the right attitude, and is probably waiting for the championship. Indeed (backing Kohli in the final),” Rohit said after the semifinal victory.

The fact that the team doesn’t seem to be depending as much on Kohli as it once did means that India will have to take a painful pill. Rishabh Pant and Suryakumar Yadav are the batsmen who have come up after the team lost early wickets. Furthermore, Axar Patel and Hardik Pandya contributed with the bat and the ball even though India breezed through the group stages. Concerns should also be raised about Ravindra Jadeja and Shivam Dube’s form as India attempts to win an ICC trophy after a ten-year hiatus.
