Dilip Vengsarkar remembers Yashasvi Jaiswal's early days in professional cricket: "We could see the hunger in him."

Yashasvi Jaiswal, a young batting star from India, has made enormous progress in his international career since making his debut against the West Indies in July 2024. The southpaw played a superb innings of 171 (387) and hit a beautiful hundred on his debut. During the second Test match between India and England in Visakhapatnam, the 22-year-old made history by becoming the third youngest batsman to achieve a double hundred for his country.

Former India captain Dilip Vengasarkar recently offered a little-known anecdote from Yashasvi Jaiswal’s early years, revealing that the young player had a burning desire to score goals from an early age. He continued to show his joy at his quick ascent to prominence on a global scale.

It is common knowledge that he hails from a very lowly background. I had brought him to England when he was fourteen or fifteen years old. He scored in every game while he was in England, and his passion was evident. Given his abilities, I had no doubt that this young man would succeed. He later competed for the India U-19 team and made a lot of runs during the World Cup, which helped the Rajasthan Royals of the Indian Premier League select him. Dilip Vengsarkar told RevSportz, “I am very happy about him and he is now the captain of Dadar Union as well, where I played for 25 years.”

Notably, with 321 runs from four innings at an average of 80.45 and a century and fifty to his credit, Jaiswal leads the run scorer in the current Test series against England. In Visakhapatnam, he scored an incredible 209 in the opening inning, while other players were unable to get more than 34 runs.

Speaking further forward, the 67-year-old spoke extensively about young people with talent like Sarfaraz Khan and Rajat Patidar, saying the latter has the right opportunity at the right moment.

“There are excellent players everywhere you look. I saw Rajat Patidar play around four years ago, and I think he’s good. But at the time, he was not given the chance. Although Sarfaraz Khan is also talented, he hasn’t been given the chance at the appropriate moment. In my opinion, it’s important to give these kids the chance to shine while they’re at their best at the right times. The player may lose form, interest, or fitness if you lose that time, Dilip Vengsarkar continued.

Before the second test, Sarfaraz was called up for the first time.

Notably, Sarfaraz was called up for the first time for India before the second Test, taking KL Rahul’s place due to injury. But Rajat Patidar, a batter from Madhya Pradesh, was selected before him; hence, he was unable to make his debut. Sarfaraz would want to be in the starting eleven for the final three Test matches because it is unclear if Virat Kohli will be available for the remaining series.
