In an unexpected statement, former India and Chennai Super Kings batsman Subramaniam Badrinath said that mystery spinner Varun Chakravarthy is currently a stronger bowler in Twenty20 Internationals than players like Jasprit Bumrah. Following the conclusion of the five-match series between Australia and India, which the visitors won 2-1, the announcement was made.
According to Badrinath, a bowler like Chakravarthy can bowl at any stage of an innings, including the middle phase, powerplay, and even the slog overs. Notably, the Tamil Nadu spinner was the top bowler for the Men in Blue after taking five wickets in three innings against Australia. Even with 99 wickets in the format, Badrinath believes he can overwhelm Bumrah because of his greater effect.
“Varun Chakravarthy is the world’s top T20 bowler, according to the numbers.
He is worth much more than Bumrah. Varun is the preferred bowler whenever there are runs coming in the middle overs, powerplay, or even the 18th over. His skill set has advanced to a new level. a fantastic return after being dropped due to fitness despite being given a chance originally. However, he has elevated his game in this second part upon his return,” Badrinath stated on Star Sports, as cited by India Today.
“He is an enormous asset—even a weapon—for India. He will be the most important element going forward, with the T20 World Cup in India. The Indian team is likely to have a successful day if Varun has a good one,” Badrinath continued.
Regarding Bumrah’s performance in the series, the Ahmedabad native took three wickets at an economy rate of 6.58, which was marginally higher than Chakravarthy’s 6.83 runs per over. The top pacer’s next appearance will be in India’s home Test series against South Africa, which begins on November 14. In contrast, Chakravarthy is anticipated to play the Twenty20 Internationals against the Proteas in December on the same tour.
