Peter Handscomb, the wicketkeeper-batsman for Australia, is determined to play every Test match in the middle order regardless of the situation in order to avoid earning the reputation as a subcontinent specialist. He is conscious, though, that he must wait and continue to perform well for Victoria in the Sheffield Shield.
On Wednesday, October 4, in Perth, the 32-year-old will start a fresh Shield season against defending champions Western Australia. He participated in all four of Australia’s Test matches on their 2023 tour of India, making him the most recent Victorian hitter to play in the format. He excelled in India but was not included in the Ashes squad because selectors still saw him as a subcontinent specialist.
He indicated that he would prefer to represent Australia in Test matches at home. He added that he has strong numbers for Victoria but is aware that making the national team will be difficult.
“I would like to play several tests at home. I play cricket here for half the year for Victoria, batting Nos. 3 and 4. Over the past few years, I’ve also fared quite well. The figures are favorable. There must be openings as well, so I must just maintain supporting it and then see if you can get a crack. Especially in Australia, the Test team is currently quite strong. Thus, it’s challenging to join that group, according to Peter Handscomb, as stated by ESPNcricinfo.
Australia has always been interested in Peter Handscomb’s methodology. The 32-year-old also believed that his mental rather than physical game had improved.
“The approach is one that is frequently discussed, and I have always played around and worked on a few things. When I visited England this year, I changed something else, and when I returned to Australia, I changed something else again, sort of trying to adjust to the environment. But mentally, it’s all about managing what you can, completing it all, and remaining in the now. I’ve done a lot of work with clinical and sports psychologists, and that has really helped me out in the middle, said the wicketkeeper-batter.
