Tymal Mills takes Gus Atkinson’s position at Desert Vipers in ILT20 2024 when he heads to England.

"I had a great time working with the Vipers, and my family and I are eager to return there and hopefully give it a lot more of a good shift when they ask again," Mills stated.

Tymal Mills takes Gus Atkinson's position at Desert Vipers in ILT20 2024 when he heads to England.

December 28, 2023, Dubai, United Arab Emirates Tymal Mills, a left-arm fast bowler who won the England T20 World Cup, has taken Gus Atkinson’s place in the Desert Vipers’ lineup for the upcoming ILT20 season.

Tymal Mills who was a member of the Vipers seam bowling squad in the inaugural competition before an injury ended his participation, has rejoined the playing group and filled the void left by Gus’s departure for the impending England Test tour of India.

Furthermore, the player’s return allows him to experience what he largely missed out on during the Vipers’ run to the championship in January and February of this year. The player holds a winner’s medal from the ICC T20 World Cup in Australia in 2022 and recently returned from a T20 international tour to the West Indies with England.

The Vipers Voices podcast heard Tymal Mills say, “It’s great to be back and yes, there is unfinished business.” “My right big toe issue returned, which was really frustrating and caused my year to end quite soon.

My family and I are very happy to be returning to Dubai and perhaps working a longer and better shift on our second request. “I loved my time with the Vipers and I stayed out for a bit longer after it was decided I would have to fly home.”

Tymal Mills gave an explanation of the physical problem, saying, “I injured my big toe on my landing foot during the English summer of 2022.” There was a lot of scar tissue and significant skin damage as a result of the infection, which required two surgeries.

Sadly, I became a little complacent and did not strap it as often as I should have because I believed it would be better and not really be a problem. I had resumed playing and things were going great. Compared to how it actually was, I believed it to be somewhat recovered.

I felt my toe hurting again during my third over in the opening game of the competition. When I went to look, I discovered quite a bit of blood and that it had reopened. It was quite annoying. Due to my good hygiene and dressing, I was able to avoid infection and the wound healed without the need for another procedure. Approximately two months passed.

Tymal Mills gave evidence throughout the UK summer that he is fully recovered, having had what may have been his greatest season ever as he performed admirably for the Sussex Sharks in the T20 Blast and the Southern Brave in the Hundred, as well as shortform cricket in Zimbabwe.

In The Hundred, he was the top wicket-taker among all teams, taking 16 wickets in nine matches. His team narrowly missed the final, falling to Manchester United in the eliminator before the grand final. He took 22 wickets in the Blast and played six games for the Bulawayo Braves in the T10 tournament.

He stated, “In my opinion, 2023 was really good.” While receiving a trophy or medal would have been nice, one thing I have never done in my career is accumulate a lot of games over time. Looking back, I can say that my summer was excellent in that sense, as I not only played games but also trained well and didn’t have to hold back or protect myself at all out of fear of getting hurt.

The Blast has a highly demanding schedule. There are fourteen group games, a lot of traveling, and a lot of playing on consecutive days. For rotation and rest, I only missed one or two. I was eager to resume my involvement in The Hundred after missing the entire competition the previous year. It was a truly satisfying experience for me to participate in every match and secure the top spot in wicket-taking throughout.

“I was still really happy with how my summer went back home, and it was nice to get some time off and let the body recharge after [losing in the eliminator game and missing out on the Lord’s final].”

Friday, January 19 is the start of the second ILT20 tournament, with the Desert Vipers playing their first game at the Dubai International Stadium on Sunday, January 21 against the Abu Dhabi Knight Riders.
