On Friday, July 11, Day 2 of the third Test between India and England, Jasprit Bumrah scored his first five-for at Lord’s Cricket Ground in London.
After a five-for in the first innings of the first Test against England at Headingley, Leeds, Bumrah was rested in the second Test at Edgbaston, Birmingham. However, he has made his presence felt at the Home of Cricket by bowling brilliantly on a surface that hasn’t been as flat as the prior two Tests, but was not a fast bowler’s paradise as many imagined.
On Day 1, Bumrah bowled a brilliant delivery to dismiss dangerous Harry Brook. In the morning session on Day 2, he dismissed Ben Stokes, Joe Root, and Chris Woakes in seven deliveries. The Gujarat seamer had a hat-trick in the fifth over after removing Root and Woakes. Brydon Carse deflected the hat-trick ball.
Bumrah’s miraculous second new ball spell reduced England from 260/4 to 271/7. However, Carse and Smith combined for 84 runs to pull England back into the game. Smith was dismissed for 51 by Mohammed Siraj, ending the vital stand. A few overs later, Bumrah defeated Jofra Archer, his fifth victim.
Bumrah’s well-deserved five-for got him on Lord’s honours board. After the right-arm pacer’s feat at the historic venue, fans haven’t stopped talking about it. His superb performance helped India bowl out England for under 400. Three Lions’ innings ended with 387 runs. Bumrah scored 5/74 in 27 overs.
