'Don't overthink or worry about things' - Travis Head shares his mentality for high-stakes games

Travis Head, the rising star in Australian cricket, has been active in a number of leagues and forms. The southpaw has had nothing short of extraordinary achievements, ranging from his valiant century against India in the 2023 World Test Championship and 2023 ODI World Cup finals to his most recent heroics in the Major League Cricket and IPL.

Head has been reliable in a number of competitions over the last year. Australia’s victory in both of the main ICC competitions were greatly aided by the left-hand hitter. Head had a terrific IPL season with Sunrisers Hyderabad and performed admirably in the 2024 T20 World Cup. His latest form has been even more spectacular.

As the eighth batter to get a century in an ODI World Cup final, he struck a stunning 137 to help Australia win their sixth World Cup of cricket. Head’s strategy during crucial games says a lot about his mental toughness.

“I believe that having my game in order and remaining cool and collected helped me during the big matches. I didn’t attempt to overthink things or stress excessively about the situation, the scenario, or the things that depend on it, Head revealed in an exclusive interview with SportsBoom.com.

Playing in the semifinals was enjoyable: Travis Head

The 30-year-old highlighted the need to focus on his game and delegate the larger strategy to the team leadership rather than overanalysing or fretting unnecessarily.

“The thought process was to just go outside and play another game of cricket. Playing a semi-final, having two days off, and then returning to the pitch was enjoyable, Head said.

He hit 567 runs for SRH in the 2024 Indian Premier League with an incredible strike rate of 91.55. His form carried over to the T20 World Cup, where he finished with 255 runs, third-highest run score.

In the Washington Freedom’s championship-winning effort at MLC 2024, Head most recently won Player of the Tournament after scoring 336 runs in nine games.
