On Sunday, December 15, on Day 2 of the third Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT 2024-25) at the legendary Gabba in Brisbane, star Australian batsman Travis Head continued his purple patch against India by smashing an incredible century. Head had an as, if not better, innings in the River City after his brilliant century in the second Test in Adelaide.
When the game was hanging in the balance, the flamboyant batter came to the crease. Interestingly, the Australian team was in trouble at 75/3 during the opening session. To make the Indian bowlers appear unimpressive, the southpaw smashed boundaries frequently and rotated his strike with ease. With just 115 balls, he reached his ninth Test century after clipping a low full-toss from Jasprit Bumrah past wide mid-on. For three runs, Head scrambled back to record the milestone.
It’s interesting to note that Travis Head became the first batter to score a century and a king pair at the same location in the same year. In the January Gabba Test between Australia and the West Indies, he had fallen short in both innings. But the 30-year-old’s redemption tale ended up being one to remember.
The southpaw reached his milestone by smashing 13 boundaries. On Sunday, after the first hour, the pitch had softened out significantly. But while some balls bounced frighteningly off a good length, others did travel past the borders. As he unsettled the Indian bowlers and fought fire with fire, Head found answers for every difficult delivery.
Together, Travis Head and Steve Smith amassed 159 runs off 224 balls, with Smith scoring a calm half-century. In the last session, both players, who were undefeated at Tea on Day 2, would try to further Australia’s supremacy in the Test match. India will need to mount a fierce defence in the second session before the game starts in order to pull away from the hosts, who have established a dominating lead at 234/3.
Here’s how the fans reacted to Travis Head’s blistering century:
