Player of the Match Rohit Sharma’s magnificent century was the high point of India’s series-ending victory over England in the second ODI on Sunday, February 9, at the Barabati Stadium in Cuttack.
When England won the toss and chose to bat first in a match that they had to win, they got off to a fantastic start. In the first powerplay, their openers Ben Duckett and Phil Salt gave it their all, scoring 75 runs without losing a wicket. Salt, however, returned to the dugout in the eleventh over after Varun Chakravarthy, the team’s rookie, took the maiden wicket on the fifth ball to start his One-Day career.
In his ten-over session, which included a maiden, seasoned specialist Ravindra Jadeja gave just 35 runs while taking three wickets. Nevertheless, England appeared well-positioned for a massive score, as Duckett (65 off 56) and Joe Root (69 off 72) made sure to get the scoreboard moving with a high scoring rate. But after scoring 304 in 49.5 overs, they were bundled out, and three run-outs characterised their unexpected collapse in the first innings.
The hosts had a strong response right from the start. Together with his assistant Shubman Gill, captain Rohit used some crisp hitting around the ground to destroy the English bowling attack. A half-century in Cuttack was also required of Gill, who struck 87 in the Nagpur match. He left for 60 off 52 deliveries, including nine fours and a beautiful paddle sweep to Adil Rashid that went for a six at the deep square leg region.
Rohit, in contrast to Gill, achieved a last-ditch century, actually taking the lead with his 119 off just 90 balls. After more than a year, the senior hitter achieved his first three-figure score in international cricket with his 32nd ODI tonne, which included seven balls that were launched into the atmosphere for maximums. But Virat Kohli, who was making a comeback, didn’t do well and left after only five runs.
Axar Patel (41 not out from 43) and Shreyas Iyer (44 off 47) made useful cameos at the conclusion of the game to put the finishing touches on the chase. In the end, the English bowlers, like their entire team, had little to be proud of after Jamie Overton took a few wickets. Liam Livingstone and Adil Rashid, both leg-spinners, also claimed a wicket each.
