On Wednesday, February 12, India and England faced off in the third and final ODI of the series at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. With the series already won in India’s favour in Cuttack, England entered this match hoping to regain some respect and gain momentum in the lead-up to the Champions Trophy.
After winning the toss, the visitors decided to field first. The hero of the previous game, Rohit Sharma (1 off 2), was unable to get going after falling to a peach of a ball from Mark Wood in the second over. Virat Kohli emerged and established a strong alliance with Shubman Gill. With 116 runs for the second wicket, the pair laid the groundwork for the batsmen to follow. Adil Rashid dismissed Kohli (52 off 55) with a ball that strayed away after a calm-looking innings.
Gill was doing well at the other end, scoring boundaries on a regular basis. He then partnered with Shreyas Iyer (78 off 64), who scored quickly to strengthen the innings and help the team reach a high total. Together, they scored 104 runs. In contrast, Gill reached his century from 95 balls (112 off 102). Iyer and KL Rahul (40 off 29) kept adding runs after he left in the 35th over.
In their whole allotted 50 overs, India reached a dominant 356 thanks to strong support from the lower order. With the exception of Liam Livingstone, practically every other bowler entered the wickets column, making Rashid (4/64) the standout player.
As has been their pattern this series, England got off to a great start. In order to exert pressure on the Indian bowlers, Ben Duckett (34 off 22) was cruising along and hitting boundaries. But with 60 runs on the board in the seventh over, he misplayed a pull to give Rohit Sharma a straightforward catch at mid-off, ending his innings. The next player to leave with the score on 80 was his partner-in-crime, Phil Salt (23 off 21), who was playing brilliantly at the other end.
Resurgent Tom Banton (38 off 41) was looking good against the spinners and teamed up with Joe Root (24 off 29) in a possibly game-changing partnership. However, both batters fell quickly after one another. The pressure of the needed run rate caused the following hitters to give insufficient contributions. Despite a late surge by Gus Atkinson (38 off 19), it appeared to be a losing effort.
In the end, England lost the match by 142 runs after being bowled out for 214 runs in the 35th over. Axar Patel, Hardik Pandya, Harshit Rana, and Arshdeep Singh all claimed two wickets for India. India clinched the series 3-0 with this victory.
