On Saturday, January 25, the 2nd T20I of the five-match series between India and England took place at Chennai’s MA Chidambaram Stadium. India chose to bowl first after winning the toss.
Due to injury, Nitish Reddy and Rinku Singh were replaced by Washington Sundar and Dhruv Jurel for India, while Jamie Smith made his debut for England, replacing the ailing Jacob Bethell and Gus Atkinson with Brydon Carse.
The openers were dispatched by single-figure scores, which hindered England’s start. Once again, captain Jos Buttler (45 off 30) saved the day by forming partnerships with Liam Livingstone and Harry Brook, both of whom scored 13 runs. Smith (22 off 12), who was making his debut, had an attacking innings after Buttler was dismissed, but he was out in the deep after going for one shot too many.
Despite the frequent wickets, England was able to identify hitters who were willing to put up a fight. It appeared like Brydon Carse (31 off 17) would lead England to a score of 170+, but his regrettable runout ruined those hopes. In the end, England’s 20 over total was 165/9. Axar Patel finished with stats of 2/32, making him the best bowler for India.
India’s innings got off to a poor start. After smashing three fours off Jofra Archer, Abhishek Sharma, the match’s hero (12 off 6), was dismissed cheaply. Samson was dismissed for just five runs in the third over, indicating that he did not survive long either. Suryakumar Yadav (12 off 7) and Tilak Varma (72* off 55) combined to score 39 runs, setting the stage for subsequent hitters. Dhruv Jurel (4 off 5) was the next to be removed after the latter chopped on a Carse delivery. At this point, England was well into the match and India was 66/4 after 7.4 overs.
Jurel’s wicket effectively swung the tide in England’s advantage, as Hardik Pandya (7 off 6) was unable to remain at the crease long enough. Washington Sundar (26 off 19), who established a crucial 38-run partnership, was out. Varma, on the other side, kept India in the game by maintaining a constant pace. Axar (2 off 3) and Arshdeep (6 off 4) threw away their wickets when all they had to do was rotate the strike or simply let Varma take the strike as frequently as possible after Sundar was removed, adding another twist to the story.
With two wickets remaining, Varma and Ravi Bishnoi (9* off 5) pulled India home in the last over. With three wickets, Carse was England’s top bowler. In the last moments, the game’s balance changed multiple times, but the home team won and took a 2-0 lead.
