Former Leicestershire and England Under-19 head coach Tim Boon has been engaged by Sri Lanka Cricket as a coach and high-performance consultant for a one-month term that begins on May 8.
Tim Boon was England’s squad analyst during the historic 2005 Ashes victory, working with Duncan Fletcher.
He will serve as a batting consultant for the Sri Lanka Under-17s, men’s emerging team, and women’s senior and A-team teams.
“Technical and tactical sessions aimed at improving the players’ overall batting approach and individual performance” are part of his curriculum, according to a news statement from SLC.
His temporary appointment follows the “comprehensive 10-day fielding programme” that India’s former fielding coach R Sridhar led for Sri Lanka’s top men’s and women’s cricket players earlier this month.
This carries on SLC’s practice of hiring foreign coaches for temporary positions. Zubin Bharucha, the high-performance director for the Rajasthan Royals, ran a quick program in 2024 with the aim of raising batting standards. Over the past ten years, legendary former South Africa batsman Jonty Rhodes and legendary former Pakistani pacer Wasim Akram have both been brought in to oversee short bowling and fielding programs, respectively.
What will happen to Sri Lanka next?
The two-match ODI series against Australia in Colombo in February was Sri Lanka’s final international cricket match. They did not qualify for the international competition, hence they were unable to compete in the ensuing Champions Trophy.
When Sri Lanka hosts Bangladesh in a two-match Test series in June, they will be back in action. Beginning on June 17, the first Test will take place at Galle International Stadium. On June 25, the Sinhalese Sports Club in Colombo will host the second Test.
Following the two Test matches, the Asian countries will face off in a three-match ODI series and three Twenty20 Internationals. The third Twenty20 International between Bangladesh and Sri Lanka will conclude on July 16 at the R. Premadasa Stadium in Colombo.
