The 2022 Indian Premier League (IPL) saw Tilak Verma disclose that he had suffered a muscular breakdown. The southpaw continued to play domestic cricket, though, in order to allow his body time to heal. The situation deteriorated as a result of his overstretching himself.
Tilak Verma claims that he was forced to retire due to injury during a match during the 2022 India A tour to Bangladesh. After being signed by the Mumbai Indians, the young batter recounted how Akash Ambani had approached the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) for assistance with his medical care. Had he been at the hospital sooner rather than later, Tilak Verma said, his health might have been seriously compromised.
“In Bangladesh, I was participating in an India A match. I couldn’t even lift the bat after a point, my eyes started to water, and my nerves were all shot. I came out and retired hurt. I got a call from Akash Ambani immediately. The BCCI was really helpful to me once he spoke with them. They informed me that if I had arrived at the hospital even a few hours late, things might have grown worse. That was how awful it was. Not even the needle was getting through. Tilak stated on ‘Breakfast with Champions’, “I just wanted to survive our encounter.”
I was informed by my coach that he was confident I would succeed and become the best player: Tilak Verma
Even before he was selected for the Hyderabad squad, Tilak said that his childhood coach had predicted he would be a fantastic player. The 22-year-old stated that his early years’ hardships were the source of his toughness.
“My coach assured me he was confident I would succeed and emerge as the best player. This was something dad would say to me before I had even begun playing for Hyderabad. A lot of individuals also spoke negatively about me and told my coach things. He worked a lot on me, though, and never paid attention to anyone. At times, I would even drop to people’s feet to be given a single chance to play. I became hard as a result. People claim that I do well under duress. But all of this seems pointless to me because of the things I’ve witnessed,” Tilak Verma remarked.
Tilak Verma was instrumental in the Men in Blue’s low-scoring victory over Pakistan in the 2025 Asia Cup final, thanks to his cool-headed and collected half-century. He will play for the Indian squad again when they play Australia in a five-match Twenty20 International series that begins on Wednesday, October 29.
