At Chennai’s MA Chidambaram Stadium on Saturday, January 25, India defeated England by two wickets with four balls remaining in the second Twenty20 International. With a spectacular half-century, Tilak Varma was India’s outstanding batsman.
The tourists were asked to bat first after Suryakumar Yadav won the toss earlier in the day. Before Jos Buttler and Harry Brook formed a respectable partnership, England lost their opening pair inside the powerplay. However, Varun Chakravarthy defeated Brook once more after using a googly to get past the batter’s defense.
Axar Patel concluded his tenure after scoring an impressive forty-five, despite the England captain’s strong batting performance. During his 12-ball time at the crease, debutant Jamie Smith scored 22 runs and looked terrific. Jamie Overton and Liam Livingstone, however, struggled with the bat.
England reached a respectable 165/9 in 20 overs because to a superb knockdown performance by Brydon Carse, who scored 31 off 17 balls.
Before being removed in the second over, Abhishek Sharma smashed three boundaries in the opening over. The third over saw the dismissal of Sanju Samson. Suryakumar was dismissed in the final over of powerplay after hitting three boundaries in short succession.
Throughout the middle overs, India continued to lose wickets, but Tilak Varma held firm. As the two left-handers formed a 38-run partnership for the sixth wicket, Washington Sundar provided Tilak with solid support. To get England back into the match, Brydon Carse got rid of the Tamil Nadu all-rounder in the fourteenth over.
India’s hopes were on Tilak Varma, hence Axar Patel was fired cheaply.
Ravi Bishnoi provided the Hyderabad batter with strong support. India needed six to win the final over.
Before hammering the second ball for a boundary through the cover area, Tilak scored a couple off the first ball. Tilak completed with 72* off 55 balls, giving India the victory with two wickets remaining. With this tense victory, India seized a 2-0 lead in the five-match series.
