Tilak Varma: ‘I replied to them perfectly’

After returning to his hometown of Hyderabad from Dubai, Indian cricketer Tilak Varma, the hero of the Asia Cup 2025 final, spoke for the first time. On Sunday, September 28, Varma led the Men in Blue to their eleventh Asia Cup victory with an undefeated 69 off 53 balls.

After India had lost three wickets, Tilak Varma disclosed that the Pakistani players attempted to control the match. After India’s eventual victory, he responded skilfully by remaining composed and playing tactically. After leading India to victory, the left-hander celebrated fervently after hitting three fours and four sixes to end the match.

“Once we were behind three, they (the Pakistani players) put up a strong fight, but in my opinion, it was crucial to maintain composure and play effectively in order to win the game.

“Everyone had seen my flawless response to them after I won,” Tilak Varma told the reporters.

During the Asia Cup 2025, India overcame their bitter rivals Pakistan three times: once in the Group Stage, once in the Super Fours, and once in the summit match. Indian captain Suryakumar Yadav was instrumental in pursuing Pakistan’s aim during the Group Stage. Abhishek Sharma and Shubman Gill, the openers, dominated the Super Four match from the beginning and won handily.

Pakistan scored 146 runs in the final, with Sahibzada Farhan leading the way with 57. Kuldeep Yadav, an Indian left-arm spinner, was instrumental in containing the opposition with a four-wicket haul. Rinku Singh scored the game-winning runs as India chased the mark with two balls remaining, securing their seventh Asia Cup victory.

The Indian team did not have a ceremonial award presentation and went home without the trophies, so the festivities were overshadowed. The controversy caused tensions between the teams even after the team’s victory on the pitch.

The majority of Indian athletes have now gone on to their next tasks. While some, including important players, are getting ready for the two-match Test series against the West Indies, which starts on October 2 at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, others are taking part in the ODI series against Australia A.
