Tilak Varma hopes to put an end to MI’s IPL title drought, saying, “I haven’t had that winning feeling yet.”

"I always admit to Surya bhai and Rohit bhai that I haven't yet had that victory sensation. We haven't taken home the prize since I joined in 2022," Tilak remarked.

Tilak Varma hopes to put an end to MI's IPL title drought, saying, "I haven't had that winning feeling yet."

All eyes will be on local youngster Tilak Varma when the Mumbai Indians (MI) take on Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) in Match 41 of the 2025 Indian Premier League at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium. Since making his debut for MI in 2022, the left-handed batter has been an outstanding performance, and he hopes that this year will finally end their title drought. Tilak Varma thinks MI’s recovery is stronger than ever as they get back on track after a rough start.

MI has frequently seen itself come back from behind and win the championship after missing out on the playoffs in recent years. The team’s beginning performance this year was similar, winning just one of their first five games. However, MI is again back in the fight after a close 12-run victory over the Delhi Capitals and solid wins over the Chennai Super Kings and SRH.

A victory over SRH on Wednesday might move them up to the top three in the standings, where they are currently sixth. Tilak Varma finds the match particularly meaningful for the team in addition to the fact that it takes place in Hyderabad, his hometown.

“I always admit to Surya bhai and Rohit bhai that I haven’t yet had that victory sensation. We haven’t taken home the trophy since I joined in 2022. Although I’ve had a good three seasons personally, the squad hasn’t produced the outcomes we were hoping for. We’re confident and prepared to give it everything we’ve got this year,” he said exclusively on JioHotstar’s special series “Gen Bold.”

Surya bhai fosters such a supportive atmosphere: Tilak Varma

The southpaw expressed gratitude to the Mumbai team and captain Hardik Pandya for helping him flourish through a solid support network. Additionally, he gave Suryakumar Yadav credit for fostering a supportive atmosphere that extends to the field.

“My relationship with Hardik bhai is excellent. He gave me my cap when I made my T20 debut. It was a truly unique experience. We also performed together last year. He honestly communicates in the event of a problem and consistently supports players. We have a great relationship, and I hope that this year will be no exception. On and off the pitch, our relationship is excellent’, he remarked.

“Whether it’s with the Mumbai Indians team or the Indian squad, Surya bhai fosters such a happy atmosphere, and it shows on the pitch. Sometimes we can communicate with one other without even calling each other while rushing between wickets since we have such a good understanding. Tilak Varma continued, “That kind of off-field chemistry really helps on the pitch too.”

Mumbai has recently performed well after key players regained their form at the appropriate moment. The bowling assault has been reinforced by Trent Boult’s swing, Mitchell Santner’s spin, and Jasprit Bumrah’s return to rhythm. Tilak Varma stated that he respects Bumrah’s composure and the abilities he contributes.

He is always at ease and incredibly composed under duress. You can’t see it on his face in any circumstance. It seemed as though he was bowling in the nets, even when he bowled the 19th over in the World Cup final. “I try to learn from that and I admire it,” the child said.
