‘Three captains complicate things’ – Aakash Chopra urges India to avoid split leadership

Aakash Chopra: South Africa unlikely for WTC 2027 final, Sri Lanka have better chance

Aakash Chopra, a former Indian cricket player, believes that the Indian team shouldn’t assign separate captains to different formats. According to recent reports, India may decide to permanently use dual captaincy. Nonetheless, Aakash Chopra pointed out that continuity is crucial in cricket as opposed to football, where it is not given as much weight.

“A captain plays a huge part. The captain has a limited role in many team sports. For instance, football has a very small influence. The manager oversees the game from a distance. That isn’t the case with cricket. The game of cricket is really intuitive. There, you can’t spoon-feed a captain.

“You want a little continuity in such a situation,” Aakash Chopra said in a video posted to his YouTube page.

The former cricket player who is now a commentator added that while having even two captains could be useful, having three would be overkill.

“Typically, there is a separate white-ball captain in addition to the Test captain. Two captains are still understandable to me. But having three captains for three different formats makes things more difficult since there will be some overlap between them,” he continued.

He believed it would be ineffective for athletes to have to adjust to different ideas.

“You see that there is a lot of overlap when you see that Mohammed Siraj and Jasprit Bumrah are playing all three formats, while Shubman Gill and KL Rahul are playing Tests and ODIs. “There is dilution if the players overlap and the captain alternates and adopts a different mindset each time,” Aakash Chopra noted.

At the moment, India has three distinct captains for the various formats: Suryakumar Yadav for the Twenty20 Internationals, Rohit Sharma for the One-Day Internationals, and Shubman Gill for the Tests. However, Rohit has withdrawn from Test matches (before to the 2025 Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy) and Twenty20 Internationals (following the 2024 T20 World Cup).

Under Gill’s leadership, the Men in Blue recently tied 2-2 with England in the most recent five-match series. The Asia Cup in the United Arab Emirates is where they will next compete.
