Former players and supporters have had differing opinions about the 15-member Indian cricket team for the 2025 Asia Cup, which starts on September 9. Nearly all cricket analysts believe that two players, Yashasvi Jaiswal and Shreyas Iyer, should have been selected.
Iyer was totally ignored while Jaiswal was chosen from the five reserve players. Kris Srikkanth, the 1983 World Cup winner, stated that he finds it confusing that Rinku Singh, Shivam Dube, and Harshit Rana were chosen for the Asia Cup team.
India may win the Asia Cup with the team they have chosen, but it may not help them in the T20 World Cup the following year, according to the former BCCI top selector.
On his YouTube channel, Srikkanth stated, “We may win the Asia Cup with this team, but there is no chance of winning the T20 World Cup with this bunch.”
Will you lead this squad to the World Cup? With just six months to go, is this the build-up to the T20 World Cup? Their progress has regressed. Axar Patel was removed from his position as vice captain. I’m not sure how Harshit Rana, Shivam Dube, and Rinku Singh entered the picture. Although the IPL is regarded as the primary selection criterion, the selectors appear to have taken performances into account beforehand,” he continued.
Rinku’s T20 career with the Indian team got off to a fantastic start. But his performances have declined concerningly. Rinku’s performance has declined even in the Indian Premier League (IPL). The southpaw only managed 206 runs at an average of 29.43 in 13 games during the 2025 Indian Premier League.
Last year, Dube’s performance in the T20 World Cup wasn’t too good. The Mumbai all-rounder did not leave a lasting impression, with the exception of a significant cameo in the final. During IPL 2025, he was hot and cold, amassing 357 runs at an average of 32.45 with a strike rate of 132.22 in 14 games.
In contrast, Harshit Rana has only participated in one T20I match thus far. In 13 IPL 2025 games, he claimed 15 wickets, although he gave up runs at an economy rate of 10.18. He has, however, been playing well in the Delhi Premier League (DPL) 2025, taking 11 wickets at an average of 19.18 in seven games.
