In an IPL match, there may not be an unlimited amount of Super Overs to break the tie, but the Super Overs will continue until a winner is determined. But within an hour of the match beginning, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) anticipates that the tie will be broken. Additionally, it permits one failed DRS in the Super Overs.
“As many Super Overs as possible can be played until a winner is determined, which is up to an hour after the main match is over. Within ten minutes of the conclusion of the main match, the first Super Over must begin. Following the conclusion of the most recent Captains’ Meet, the BCCI notified the franchise that if the first Super Over ended in a draw, the second Super Over would have to begin five minutes later.
“If the match referee believes that the allotted one hour will be exceeded, he will notify the captains of the last super over. The Super Over will carry over all player warnings and penance time that were not used in the main match. Any time restrictions imposed by the MPC on interrupted Super Overs will be communicated to the captains by the match referee. Each team will be allowed one unsuccessful review every Super Over.
The BCCI later elaborated on this by outlining the Super Over’s regulations.
In a Super Over, each team faces a six-ball over (unless it ends earlier as specified in paragraph 2), and the team that scores the most runs—regardless of the number of wickets lost—wins.
2. The team’s one-over innings is over when they lose two wickets in the over.
3. In the event of a tie in the Super Over, more Super Overs will be played until a winner is established. In order to decide a result, an infinite number of Super Overs may be played, unless there are special circumstances (as described in paragraph 24 below).
4. The Super Over will take place on the day of the match at a time to be decided by the IPL Match Referee, subject to weather circumstances. Under typical conditions, it will start ten minutes after the game is over.
5. If there are any delays or disruptions during the Super Over, additional time is allotted to finish the Super Over or any following Super Overs. Otherwise, the Super Over will be played until it is finished. When calculating the allotted extra time, the 10-minute changeover period for a Super Over following the main match should not be considered. The Super Over will be given more time if the following is true:
a. the difference between when the game concluded and when the original game would have ended if all of the extra time had been used,
or
c. Twenty minutes.
6. Unless the umpires decide otherwise after consulting with the Ground Authority and IPL Match Referee, the Super Over will take place on the pitch designated for the match.
7. The Super Over is only open to players who have been nominated for the match, including Concussion Replacements.
8. Any time spent on penalties during the game will be carried over to the Super Over.
9. The umpires will stand at the same end where the game was concluded.
10. In the Super Over, the team that bats second in the contest will bat first.
11. One unsuccessful Player Review per Super Over will be permitted for each team.
12. From the box of spare balls that the umpires offer, the fielding team’s captain (or his designee) will choose the ball that the team will bowl over in the Super Over. This box will contain the balls that were used during the match, but not brand-new balls. The second-fielding team can then select a different ball from the same box or use the same ball that was selected by the first-fielding team. The same Playing Conditions that apply during the match will also apply during the Super Over if the ball needs to be replaced.
13. The fielding team will select which end to bowl their one over from.
14. The fielding limits that apply to the final over in a match played in an unbroken fashion also apply to the Super Over.
15. In the Super Over, there will be a 5-minute break between each of the two overs.
SUPER OVER TIED – REPEATING
THE EXCELLENT PROCEDURE
16. Subsequent Super Overs will be played until a winner is determined if the Super Over is tied (subject to paragraph 16.3.1).
17. Normally, the next Super Over will begin five minutes after the previous one concludes.
18. In the next Super Over, the team that batted second in the previous Super Over will bat first.
19. In consecutive Super Overs, the same team will use the balls they chose to use in the preceding Super Over.
20. In a future Super Over, the fielding side must bowl its over from the opposite end from which it bowled in the previous Super Over.
21. A hitter who has been removed in a prior Super Over will not be allowed to bat in the next Super Over. In the event that a batter retires during a Super Over without suffering an injury, his innings will be marked as Retired Out and he will not be permitted to continue, even with the fielding captain’s approval. In the next Super Over, the hitter will not be allowed to bat.
22. A bowler who entered the previous Super Over will not be allowed to enter the next one.
23. The process for a follow-up Super Over will be identical to that of the first Super Over in every other respect.
SUPERIORLY UNABLE TO FINISH
24. The match will be deemed a tie and points will be distributed in accordance with Clause 16.10.1 if the Super Over or any succeeding Super Overs are abandoned for any reason before they are finished.
